Lymphedema Program

RETURN TO PREVIOUS PAGE

Lymphedema is a chronic condition that causes painful swelling of an arm, leg or another part of the body. CarePartners therapists can provide relief from swelling as well as training to help you manage your lymphedema day to day.

Our specially certified physical and occupational therapists use a combination of treatment methods to help you manage your condition, including:

  • Targeted massage to move lymph fluid away from nodes or vessels that aren’t working, and toward ones that are
  • Special bandages or garments that reduce swelling, improve circulation and prevent the re-accumulation of lymph fluid
  • Exercises designed to help the muscular system pump lymph fluid away from the affected area
  • Training in a home management program

Symptoms of Lymphedema

People who have had surgery and/or radiation therapy sometimes develop secondary lymphedema, resulting from damage or deficiency in the lymph system. Patients with primary lymphedema are born with a deficiency in their lymph system.

Symptoms may include:

  • Heaviness, weakness, tightness, aching or discomfort in arm or leg
  • Swelling
  • Reduced flexibility or range of motion in the swollen body part
  • Hardening, thickening or reddening of the skin of the affected part
  • Tight-fitting rings, shoes or clothing

Is the CarePartners Lymphedema Program Right for You?

If you have been diagnosed with lymphedema, ask your doctor if CarePartners is right for you. Most insurance plans offer physical or occupational therapy benefits, and a CarePartners Patient Access Coordinator can help with insurance coverage information.
